His official 'famous'' debut was in a 1980 episode of Sesame Street. Elmo has been featured on so many famous shows and countless episodes of Sesame Street. He has been around since the 1970s, but was only ever used as an extra in many of the Sesame Street episodes. Back then he was just known as 'baby monster'. Elmo's accent is referred to as a light Baltimore accent.
Here are just some of the many shows and movies Elmo has starred in or has had a guest appearance:
- Sesame Street
- The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo
- Martha Stewart Living
- The Tony Danza Show
- Teen Kids News
- Emeril Live
- The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland
- The Muppets Take Manhattan
- A Muppet Family Christmas
- Elmopalooza
- When You Wish Upon a Pickle
A fun fact: in 2006 the Sesame Workshop started a program for military families called "Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments". Elmo's dad has to travel and was away for a while, which allowed military children to connect with Elmo. This helped them cope with their parent being deployed throughout their military service.
All of my kids love Elmo. Now I know he's not for everyone, but you have to admit that he does keep kids entertained for quite some time.
